KHIPU 2025: Latin American Meeting in Artificial Intelligence

The second week of March we were with Diversa at Khipu AI for those who don't know it, Khipu is one of the most important meetings on artificial intelligence in Latin America, it brings together researchers, students and professionals working in AI from different disciplines and territories. This was our third time at Khipu, and since that first edition in 2019 in Uruguay, many things have changed.

At that time, Diversa did not yet formally exist, but long before that we believed in other possible ways of doing and thinking about AI. Shortly after, in 2020, Diversa was born with the intention of promoting a more critical, more human and more responsible artificial intelligence. Since then, we have worked a lot on issues that for us are fundamental in the development of this technology: Who is it developed for? How is it built? Where does the data come from? Does it have inclusive perspectives? This year we were able to share part of that path through a poster where we showed some of our lines of work: urbanism with a critical perspective, use of LLMs and RAG adapted to our contexts, studies on peripheral territories, volcanic monitoring systems, and more.

We also participated in several spaces such as the sociocultural analysis of language models given by Fundación Vía Libre, the panel on Human Rights and AI, where we reaffirmed our admiration and support for those who make these urgent issues visible, and the conference by Sara Hooker from Cohere, who proposed that scaling large systems is still really the most important thing. In addition, we spoke with Catherine D'Ignazio at the Women in AI event, where we reaffirmed how important it is to translate the principles of a more inclusive AI into concrete practice in each of our projects.

We are interested in building more transparent conversations about the use and implementation of AI, especially from Latin America and the Global South. We know that we often occupy a place of consumers and labor within the AI value chain. But we also believe in our ability to create our own tools. One of our commitments is to keep working to grow Diversa and continue to bring a critical look at AI from the Global South. We would love that for the next Khipu our community will be even bigger and, why not, to continue generating more spaces to share what we do. Thanks to Khipu for letting us attend and share our work for the third time.
